A few weeks ago, while sighing, I mean, clicking through Amazon for lettering books I felt super frustrated because I wanted a book right away so bad that just the thought of waiting for shipping felt like an eternity! I know, if you live in the states you're like "what?! Oooh pppfff c'mon! Just make it express shipping and voila!" Well, wrong! I live outside the US, and even worst, I just recently moved to the small town of Puerto Vallarta so it is even harder to get stuff delivered here! It turned out this was the best thing that could happen to me. I searched for lettering books for Kindle and there it was: "The Complete Book of Chalkboard LetTering" by Valerie Mckeenan. Oh, my God! Even if you're not interested on chalkboard art and because you're more into brush lettering (that is all the craze right now) I would STRONGLY recommend this book. It covers everything you need to know about the creative process of lettering plus you'll get to learn an amazing new skill from an extremely talented artist.
Definitely I've got the best boyfriend a lettering newbie can have. The day after Christmas he came back home from The States with a set of Tombow dual brush pens, a gorgeous Lamy fountain pen and he even added an ink bottle and a converter. I don't deserve him! lol
I travelled to my hometown for my birthday. Guadalajara, being the second largest city in Mexico, has a great selection of art stores so I made one of my biggest discovery: right there, in the small art supply store that had been in the same tiny mall ever since I was a child I found a very decent selection of disposable brush and calligraphy pens. Oh I went wild with Joy! Now, with a new small collection of Pentel Touch pens I felt like I could take over the world!
On my birthday, while waiting in line at the bank, I was watching countless brush lettering videos in Instagram. I found it perfectly soothing for the long hour plus wait. And that is how I found the marvellous Mhelanie Hernandez and her multiple lettering challenges! Oh the joy! Of course I’m not the most consistent person so I skipped a bunch of prompts. A lot of changes and things were going in my life at that time so setting some minutes aside wasn’t that easy.
I found a great Youtuber vlog called Boho Berry and she was a whole lot of inspiration from bullet journaling, to organising and having a better life... omg. Just go and check her vlog, I promise you won't be sorry. She had a challenge called "Rock your handwriting" and that is where it all began. I became obsessed with playing with my handwriting, playing with my own calligraphy styles and then that got me to... (yes, you're right!) HAND LETTERING!!! Oh, the pens and the tools and all of the beauty of it all!
Living in Puerto Vallarta it is not easy to get such pens and tools and waiting for Amazon to deliver felt like I would have to wait an eternity! So I prompted out what I had in my stationery and drawing hoarding collection and found not one but two Copic Multi-liner brush pens that I had impulsively purchased in Japan! I patted myself on the back and found another excuse to justify my compulsive shopping and I started making letters and full alphabets without knowing what I was doing.
These are my first attempts:
